Artist Profile: Michael Hofmeyer, Goldsmith - Designer

By Rosanne Peach

You soon realize you're in for a treat when you arrive at Michael Hofmeyer's bright pink and lime green studio. This charming mix of deco design, Queensland influenced architecture and vibrant, modern interiors is indicative of Michael's creative flair. His stunning jewellery embraces ancient elements of goldsmithing, combined with innovative and directional design.

Michael approached goldsmithing from both a trades and arts/design perspective and his focus is demonstrably on both wearability and creativity. Having also studied under a master goldsmith in Florence, Italy, his penchant for ancient detailing and textured surfaces is prevalent in much of his work. Many of the great Renaissance sculptors and painters started in the revered art of goldsmithing, using these same traditional Florentine techniques.

Michael's beautiful wedding and engagement rings, exhibition pieces and other enviable designs often feature elements of Repoussé, which involves raising the form, and Chasing, which is the fine detailing after the form has been raised. While the techniques are steeped in a rich artistic heritage, Michael's designs promote a fresh approach to contemporary design, and are causing international demand.

Where do you find inspiration for your designs?

From a combination of ancient work, very textural and highly detailed, and clean, minimal/industrial, contemporary form.

What are your favorite material/stones etc to work with, why?

White and yellow gold for their richness, malleability and preciousness. Titanium and stainless steel for their colour tones.

Do you still find time for art beyond the bread and butter jobs?

You do have to address the business side, but I have worked hard to be independent and am now at a point where I have the freedom to make work that I love creating. I do a lot of wedding and engagement rings but this too is very challenging as people become involved in the design process and this produces meaningful pieces. Each person brings with them their design brief and tastes and between us something creative emerges.

Other passions?

Travel. I love to travel.

"The greatest design challenge is to marry innovative designs with wearability. This is much more challenging than an open brief."
